Lip-Bu Tan

Lip-Bu Tan (born 1959 in Muar, Malaysia, raised in Singapore) spent decades as one of the semiconductor industry’s most connected figures — founding the venture firm Walden International, running chip-design giant Cadence as CEO from 2009 to 2021, and backing hundreds of hardware startups. In March 2025 he was handed the hardest job in silicon: rescuing Intel, the fallen icon that had missed the AI boom almost entirely.

Rebuilding Intel for the AI era

Tan’s opening message at Intel Vision 2025 was blunt — “You deserve better, and we need to improve” — and his prescription was AI-shaped. In his July 2025 shareholder letter and earnings remarks he said Intel was “laser-focused” on its core products and AI roadmap, steering the company toward inference and agentic AI workloads rather than chasing Nvidia head-on in training. By late 2025 he was arguing that agentic AI was triggering a renaissance in CPU demand — territory Intel still dominates — alongside new purpose-built accelerators and its foundry business.

His first year was as turbulent as it was consequential: deep layoffs and a flattened management structure, an August 2025 broadside from President Trump demanding his resignation over past China investments (withdrawn after a White House meeting), and an unprecedented deal that saw the US government take a roughly 10 percent stake in Intel. Through it all Tan kept selling the same story — that the explosion of AI compute demand is precisely the wave Intel must catch to matter again.
