Noam Shazeer

Transformer Co-inventor; Co-founder of Character.AI

Co-author of the Transformer paper that made modern AI possible, founder of Character.AI, and the engineer Google reportedly paid $2.7 billion to bring back to co-lead Gemini — before he left again for OpenAI in 2026.

In his words

The internet was the dawn of universally accessible information and we’re now entering the dawn of universally accessible intelligence.
Andreessen Horowitz, 2023
I don’t think anyone’s seen the scaling laws stop. As far as anybody has experimented, stuff just keeps getting smarter.
Andreessen Horowitz, 2023

Biography

Noam Shazeer (born 1976) joined Google in 2000 and spent two decades as one of its most storied engineers, from early spelling correction to the 2017 paper “Attention Is All You Need,” which he co-authored with Aidan Gomez and six others — the Transformer architecture underlying essentially every modern AI model.

The engineer Google could not keep

Shazeer built the conversational models Meena and LaMDA, then left Google in 2021 in frustration when the company, wary of reputational risk, refused to release them. With Daniel De Freitas he founded Character.AI, whose persona chatbots attracted tens of millions of users; he told interviewers the technology could comfort the isolated and lonely, and framed his ambition as bringing personalized intelligence to everyone. In August 2024 Google brought him back in a licensing deal reported at $2.7 billion — widely described as the biggest acqui-hire in tech history — to co-lead Gemini as VP of engineering.

The story kept moving: in June 2026 Shazeer departed Google again, this time for OpenAI, in what CNBC called the year’s biggest AI talent shift. His legacy is contested in one respect — Character.AI faces wrongful-death and negligence lawsuits from families alleging its chatbots harmed teenage users, litigation that shadows his optimistic case for AI companionship.
