Ali Ghodsi

CEO of Databricks

Databricks’ co-founder and CEO, who bought MosaicML for $1.3 billion, released the open DBRX model, and repositioned his data giant around a single thesis: every enterprise should own its data and its AI.

In his words

At Databricks, our vision has always been to democratize data and AI. We’re doing that by delivering data intelligence to every enterprise — helping them understand and use their private data to build their own AI systems. DBRX is the result of that aim.

Biography

Ali Ghodsi (born 1978) fled Iran with his family as a child and grew up in Sweden, earning a PhD at KTH before joining UC Berkeley’s AMPLab, where he was one of the original contributors to Apache Spark. In 2013 he co-founded Databricks with his Berkeley collaborators to commercialize Spark, becoming CEO in 2016 and building the company into one of the most valuable private software firms in the world.

Betting the lakehouse on AI

Ghodsi moved early and aggressively when generative AI arrived: Databricks acquired MosaicML for $1.3 billion in June 2023 to give customers the tools to train their own models, then released DBRX in March 2024 — an open-source large language model that, at launch, outperformed established open models on standard benchmarks. The strategy rebranded the company around “data intelligence”: rather than renting a frontier lab’s model, enterprises should build AI on their own private data.

The bet has been lucrative — Databricks’ valuation soared past $100 billion in 2025 on the strength of AI demand — though Ghodsi is candid that training frontier models is punishingly expensive and that Databricks sidesteps the “model wars” by serving whichever models win. His pro-AI case is an economic one: AI on proprietary data is where enterprises will actually capture value, not in chasing chatbots.
