Biography
Andy Jassy (born 1968) built Amazon Web Services from an internal memo into the world’s dominant cloud business, then succeeded Jeff Bezos as Amazon’s CEO in July 2021. Under his leadership Amazon poured billions into Anthropic, built its own Trainium chips, and threaded generative AI through everything from Alexa to warehouse robotics.
The memo that said the quiet part out loud
On June 17, 2025, Jassy sent employees a memo — published openly on Amazon’s site — that became one of the AI era’s most cited documents. Generative AI and agents, he wrote, are a once-in-a-lifetime technology, and “we will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.” His prescription was blunt: “Be curious about AI, educate yourself,” experiment with it, and help reinvent the company.
The candor cut both ways. Fortune called Jassy the perfect CEO for the gen-AI cost-cutting era, while labor advocates read the memo as a layoff notice dressed as a pep talk — a reading reinforced when Amazon, which had already cut some 27,000 corporate roles since 2022, announced further large corporate layoffs later in 2025. Jassy has maintained that AI-driven efficiency is not optional in a competitive market, and that agents will free people from “rote work” to focus on invention.
