In his words

With the implementation of the generative AI function “Edit photo with Grok,” I have lost any desire to leave my work on this platform.

I’m quite sad and heartbroken over this, but I don’t think I can continue on as I have in the past.

Biography

Daisuke Moriyama (born 1971) is a Japanese manga artist best known for Chrono Crusade, a supernatural period series adapted into an anime, along with World Embryo and Thou Shalt Not Die. His detailed action work built a devoted following, much of it cultivated over years of sharing sketches and finished pieces on social media.

Deleting a decade of art

In April 2025, Moriyama deleted the artwork he had posted to X after the platform integrated a generative AI feature — “Edit photo with Grok” — that let users alter any image directly. He described losing the will to keep his work on a service that would feed it to such tools, calling the decision sad and heartbroken but necessary. He preserved some color pieces on the artist-friendly platform Xfolio while removing rough drafts from X entirely.

Moriyama’s exit was part of a broader migration of Japanese creators — including Boichi — away from X over the same feature, and it foreshadowed the larger 2025–2026 manga-industry pushback against models trained on artists’ catalogs. His protest was quiet but concrete: rather than issue a manifesto, he simply withdrew the labor of years from a platform he no longer trusted.
