We tried prosthetics, we tried traditional CGI, and everything just looked terrifying. So we just said, “To hell with it, let’s try AI.” It worked.
Biography
Seth MacFarlane (born 1973) is an American animator, writer, comedian, and singer best known for creating Family Guy and American Dad and for writing and directing the Ted comedies. A trained classical animator, he built an entertainment empire on television animation and voice work.
AI as a tool, not a shortcut
For the 2026 second season of the streaming series Ted, MacFarlane wanted to appear on screen as Bill Clinton — an impression he had voiced since the early days of Family Guy. Prosthetics and conventional CGI, he said, “just looked terrifying.” The production ultimately turned to AI face replacement to complete the effect.
Rather than treat the choice defensively, MacFarlane used it to stake out a position: that AI, deployed narrowly, can solve a specific creative problem “without necessarily trampling on the art that the rest of the industry is doing.” It is a notably lower-key defence than the industry’s AI evangelists offer — closer to “the right tool for one job” than a manifesto.
That pragmatism sits alongside MacFarlane’s long record as a union member and awards-season fixture, and he has not dismissed the labour concerns that animators have raised about generative tools.
