Biography
Genndy Tartakovsky (born 1970) is a Russian-American animator and director, one of the defining stylists of modern television animation. He created Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and the near-wordless, brutally beautiful Primal, and directed the Hotel Transylvania films. His work is prized for bold silhouettes, cinematic pacing, and a fiercely personal visual voice.
Making animation “AI-proof”
Asked in 2025 about the encroachment of generative AI on animation, Tartakovsky did not frame the answer around lawsuits or bans but around craft. His strategy is to widen the gap between what a machine can average together and what a human artist can invent. “The more unique that we can make things, the more it makes it anti-AI,” he said. “Makes it AI-proof.”
The goal, he explained, is to “push human creativity to a level where it can’t be copied” — to keep “doing original things, pushing boundaries, and trying different things.” He questions whether AI, which excels at recombination, can ever “create something truly original.”
It is a distinctly artist’s form of opposition: less a policy position than a creative dare, betting that human originality will always outrun a model trained on what already exists.
