Biography

Hayao Miyazaki (born 1941) is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and the director of My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and The Boy and the Heron — two of which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Famed for hand-drawn craft and a fierce work ethic, he is arguably the most revered animator alive.

“An insult to life itself”

In the 2016 NHK documentary Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, a team including Dwango’s Nobuo Kawakami showed Miyazaki a deep-learning demo of a grotesque CG body that had taught itself to crawl. Miyazaki, visibly disturbed, told them the movement reminded him of a disabled friend and that he was “utterly disgusted,” concluding: “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” He added that he would never wish to incorporate the technology into his work.

The clip resurfaced constantly during the generative-AI boom — during the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and most explosively in March 2025, when OpenAI’s GPT-4o image generator set off a viral wave of “Ghibli-style” portraits. Millions of users, and even Sam Altman’s own X avatar, remixed the studio’s aesthetic; 404 Media described the man who called AI an insult to life being “reduced to an AI-generated meme.” Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli made no official comment on the wave.

Context matters: the 2016 demo predates modern generative AI, and Miyazaki was reacting to a specific, ghoulish animation experiment — not to today’s image models. But his verdict has become shorthand for the handcraft camp’s entire position, and nothing he has said since suggests his view has softened.
