Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve (born 1967 in Quebec) is one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation: Incendies, Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the Dune films, whose second installment was among the biggest releases of 2024. It is a filmography soaked in machine anxiety — Arrival is about the limits of communication, Blade Runner 2049 about manufactured souls, and Dune is set in a civilization that outlawed thinking machines entirely.

Cinema as a collective act

Speaking at a London screening of Dune: Part Two in October 2024, Villeneuve addressed the prospect of AI-generated film directly: if one day movies could be made “just with a computer,” he said, it might be interesting in some ways, but he would “absolutely miss the collective act of creativity, which is so beautifully human.” For Villeneuve the set itself — hundreds of craftspeople trying “to make poetry” together — is the point of the medium, not an inefficiency to be optimized away.

His deeper worry inverts the usual framing. Earlier in 2024 he told Variety that Hollywood’s Wall Street-driven conservatism disturbed him more than the technology: he was less afraid of AI than of “the fact that we behave like algorithms, as filmmakers,” lamenting that “creativity is restricted” in a risk-averse industry. The machines, in other words, are only catching up to habits the studios already have.
