Drew Houston

Drew Houston (born 1983) co-founded Dropbox in 2007 with fellow MIT student Arash Ferdowsi, famously pitching the file-syncing service with a demo video that went viral among developers. He took the company public in 2018 and has run it continuously since — one of the longest-tenured founder-CEOs in enterprise software.

The first AI layoff memo

In April 2023, Houston laid off roughly 500 employees — 16% of Dropbox — in a public memo that became a landmark of the AI era. Beyond slowing growth, he wrote that the AI era of computing had finally arrived and that Dropbox’s next stage required “a different mix of skill sets, particularly in AI and early-stage product development.” It was among the first times a major tech CEO tied job cuts directly to AI, and headlines framed the machines as taking the blame.

Houston backed the words with a pivot: Dropbox shipped Dash, an AI universal-search and knowledge product meant to organize a customer’s entire cloud footprint, positioning it as the company’s second act beyond file storage. A further 20% workforce reduction followed in October 2024 as the transition continued — evidence, to critics, that declaring an AI era is easier than profiting from one, and to supporters, that Houston is serious about rebuilding a maturing company around it.
