Biography
Howard Wimshurst is a British animator, director, and educator who has built a large online following through his animation-tutorial YouTube channel, where he teaches technique, industry realities, and the fundamentals of the craft to hundreds of thousands of aspiring animators. His work as a teacher has made him a recognizable voice for the working animator’s perspective.
On the picket line at Annecy
In June 2025, Wimshurst was among roughly 150 animators, writers, and performers who gathered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for what organizers called a historic protest against generative AI, backed by more than 20 international guilds including The Animation Guild. Speaking there, he characterized the technology not as a neutral tool but as a vehicle for exploitation — a system designed to extract the data of artists who had spent their entire lives building their skills and portfolios.
His objection sits at the intersection of labor and consent that has come to define the animation fight: the models that threaten animators’ livelihoods were, he argues, trained on those same animators’ uncompensated work. As an educator whose audience is largely young people trying to break into the field, Wimshurst frames the stakes generationally — the entry-level opportunities and training pipeline he teaches toward are exactly what he fears AI will erode.
