Jaan Tallinn

Jaan Tallinn (born 1972) is an Estonian programmer and investor who wrote founding code for the file-sharing network Kazaa and the internet-calling service Skype, whose sale made him one of Estonia’s wealthiest men. Around 2009, after encountering the writings of Eliezer Yudkowsky, he redirected his fortune toward a then-fringe cause: the risk that smarter-than-human AI could permanently sideline humanity.

Building the existential-risk field

Tallinn co-founded the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge in 2012 and the Future of Life Institute in 2014, and has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars into AI-safety research through vehicles like the Survival and Flourishing Fund. He consistently ranks AI as the top existential risk of the century — above synthetic biology and “unknown unknowns” — and signed both the 2023 pause letter and the Center for AI Safety’s statement that mitigating AI extinction risk should be a global priority alongside pandemics and nuclear war.

The paradox of his position: Tallinn was an early investor in DeepMind and later in Anthropic — bets he has described as buying a seat at the table of the labs he fears. In 2023 interviews he characterized the race between AGI labs as a handful of companies gambling with the future of all living things, and argued for a more principled mechanism to decide how much risk humanity accepts in pursuit of AGI.

Critics of the x-risk movement argue that funders like Tallinn have pulled attention and money toward speculative future harms and away from present ones, and that his investments sit awkwardly beside his warnings. Tallinn has stood by both — insisting that being close to the frontier is how you learn whether the danger is real.
