Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (b. 1973, Mangalore) won Miss World in 1994 and became one of Indian cinema’s most recognizable global stars, with landmark films from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas to crossover roles like Bride & Prejudice, plus two decades as a L’Oréal global ambassador and Cannes fixture.

A landmark suit against AI misuse

In September 2025 she went to the Delhi High Court over an ecosystem of unauthorized exploitation: fake websites posing as official portals, merchandise bearing her image, AI chatbots impersonating her — some with sexually suggestive content — and AI-generated deepfake videos. On September 9, 2025, the court granted an ex-parte interim injunction (CS(COMM) 956/2025) restraining defendants from misappropriating her name, image, likeness or persona “through any medium or technology,” expressly naming AI, deepfakes, machine learning and face morphing.

The order had teeth: e-commerce platforms and Google were directed to remove infringing URLs within 72 hours, and India’s IT ministry was told to block identified links. The court reasoned that personality rights let individuals control the commercial value of their identity, noting that “unauthorised exploitation can lead to financial loss as well as a violation of dignity and privacy.” The case joins rulings won by her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and by Anil Kapoor in building India’s emerging judicial shield against AI persona abuse.

Rai Bachchan has not made public statements against AI technology broadly; her fight has been conducted through counsel and the courts. But as one of the most deepfaked faces in India — where morphed videos of actresses like Rashmika Mandanna have triggered national debate — her suit made her a central figure in the personality-rights-versus-AI battle.
