Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey (born 1976) co-founded Twitter in 2006 and the payments company Square — now Block — in 2009, running both simultaneously for years before leaving Twitter in 2021. A restless technologist drawn to open protocols, he has since backed the decentralized networks Bluesky and Nostr while steering Block into Bitcoin and, increasingly, artificial intelligence.

Goose and the war on IP

In January 2025 Block released Goose, a free, open-source AI agent framework that lets developers automate engineering tasks with any LLM — one of the first agent tools shipped by a major public company. Then, on April 12, 2025, Dorsey posted “delete all IP law” on X. Elon Musk replied “I agree,” and the exchange instantly became the most radical public position in the AI training-data fight, landing amid dozens of copyright lawsuits against AI companies.

Pressed by critics, Dorsey elaborated that creativity is what separates humans and the current system limits it, and that there are “much greater models to pay creators” than copyright, which he said takes too much from artists and only rent-seeks. Rights holders were unpersuaded — commentators noted that Block and X together hold thousands of patents and trademarks, and music-industry writers called the post a billionaire’s convenience dressed as principle. Lawyers pointed out the irony that abolishing IP would also erase the licenses open-source software like Goose depends on.
