Jane Fraser

Jane Fraser (born 1967 in St Andrews, Scotland) became CEO of Citigroup in 2021 — the first woman ever to run a major Wall Street bank. A former McKinsey partner who rose through Citi’s Latin America and consumer businesses, she has paired a ruthless restructuring of the sprawling bank with one of finance’s most aggressive AI deployments.

AI for 140,000 bankers

In December 2024, Citi rolled out proprietary generative AI tools — Citi Assist, a navigator for internal policies, and Citi Stylus, for summarizing and comparing documents — to roughly 140,000 employees across eight countries. In 2025 Fraser went further, sending a mandatory AI training memo to 175,000 staff across 80 locations focused on practical prompting skills; by early 2026 Citi reported around 70 percent adoption and millions of employee interactions with the tools.

Fraser is blunt about both sides of the ledger. At Davos in January 2026 she said AI “is going to create huge numbers of new jobs that we can’t even imagine what they are today… And it will take some jobs away.” Her framing to employees borrows a line now common in banking: not that AI takes your job, but that “someone using AI is probably … better at your job than you are” — so Citi’s duty is to equip its people. She has also warned that finance faces two AI races at once: deploying it for revenue while defending against AI-powered fraud, a theme echoed by peers like Jamie Dimon.
