Marc Benioff

Marc Benioff (born 1964) founded Salesforce in 1999 and turned “no software” cloud CRM into one of the world’s largest enterprise software companies. A showman-executive in the Larry Ellison mold — he was in fact an Oracle protégé — Benioff has repeatedly rebranded Salesforce around each platform wave: social, mobile, data, and now AI agents.

The Agentforce pivot

In September 2024 Salesforce launched Agentforce, autonomous AI agents that handle customer service, sales, and marketing tasks, and Benioff made “digital labor” the company’s entire story. At Davos and on earnings calls in early 2025 he delivered his signature line: today’s CEOs are the last who will manage workforces made only of human beings. He announced Salesforce would hire no new engineers in 2025 because AI had lifted productivity, and later said AI was doing 30 to 50 percent of the company’s work.

The rhetoric had receipts and costs. In 2025 Salesforce cut roughly 4,000 customer-support roles, with Benioff citing AI agents — a move critics held up as the human price of the pivot, and a talking point for those who see “digital labor” as a euphemism for layoffs. Benioff has pushed back on apocalyptic framing, telling Fortune he does not foresee a white-collar jobs apocalypse but rather a redeployment of people toward higher-value work, and he has needled rivals for overpromising fully autonomous AI.

Whatever the spin, Benioff put a Fortune-500 company where his mouth is: Salesforce now sells, runs on, and reorganizes itself around AI agents.
