Michael Bay

Michael Benjamin Bay (born 1965) is the American director whose name became shorthand for a whole grammar of blockbuster filmmaking: fast cutting, low circling hero shots, golden-hour lens flare, and an unembarrassed love of explosions. Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Ambulance, and five Transformers pictures have grossed billions, and the Transformers films in particular pushed Industrial Light & Magic into some of the most computationally expensive photoreal animation ever attempted. Critics have never quite forgiven him for any of it; audiences never stopped showing up.

Bay is not a frequent commentator on industry politics, which is part of why his one intervention travelled so far. In early November 2023 — weeks after the writers’ strike ended and while SAG-AFTRA was still out, with AI protections at the centre of both fights — he posted a short message to Instagram. It was picked up within a day by the film account DiscussingFilm and turned into a rallying line for artists who had spent the year arguing that generative models are derivative by construction.

Note what the statement is and is not. It is not a call to ban, pause, or sue anyone, and Bay has not signed the open letters or joined the campaigns that other filmmakers have. It is a capability verdict — the machine is a copyist, and copyists do not threaten originals — delivered as reassurance rather than alarm. That puts him at the opposite pole from James Cameron, who joined the board of Stability AI less than a year later on the argument that generative tools could halve the cost of a visual-effects blockbuster. Two directors who built careers on the most expensive pixels in the business reached opposite conclusions about the cheapest ones.

It is also worth registering the irony his critics reached for immediately: Bay has spent thirty years being accused of making films that imitate rather than create — that iterate the same shot grammar and the same third-act destruction across franchises. The charge he levels at AI is the charge that has been levelled at him. He is, by that reading, unusually well qualified to know an imitation when he sees one.
