Mustafa Suleyman

Mustafa Suleyman (born 1984) is the CEO of Microsoft AI. The London-born son of a Syrian taxi driver, he dropped out of Oxford, co-founded a Muslim youth helpline, and in 2010 co-founded DeepMind with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg — running its applied division until Google absorbed the lab. In 2022 he co-founded Inflection AI, maker of the empathetic chatbot Pi, before Microsoft hired him and most of his team in March 2024 to run its consumer AI business, including Copilot.

Companions and the coming wave

Suleyman is the industry’s chief evangelist for personal AI. At TED in April 2024 he argued that “tools” no longer captures what AI is, urging audiences to think of it as a new kind of digital species — with memory, personality, and creativity. At Davos in January 2026 he predicted that within five years everyone will have an AI companion that lives life alongside them. Under his leadership Microsoft has pushed Copilot toward exactly that: a personal, persistent, emotionally intelligent assistant.

His 2023 bestseller The Coming Wave gives the optimism its ballast: the book argues AI and synthetic biology form an uncontainable wave of proliferation, and that “containment” — hard limits on what the technology can do — is the challenge of the century. He has also drawn lines within the industry, publishing a 2025 essay warning against building “seemingly conscious AI” that mimics personhood. Critics note the tension in warning about a wave while selling surfboards; Suleyman argues that is precisely why builders must be the ones holding the line.
