Oren Etzioni

AI Researcher

Founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI who has spent a decade arguing doomsday fears are science fiction — while founding TrueMedia.org to fight the real AI harm he does fear: deepfakes.

In his words

Doomsday scenarios that focus on AI running amok have more to do with science fiction than the actual reality of AI.
Stevens Institute lecture, 2017
These are still tools. Power tools, but still tools working on our behalf.
GeekWire, 2026

Biography

Oren Etzioni (born 1964) is a University of Washington professor emeritus who has been building AI systems since the late 1980s, with pioneering work in web search and information extraction. From 2013 to 2022 he was founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), Paul Allen’s nonprofit research lab, and he has co-founded and backed dozens of startups as a technical founder and venture partner.

Against hype and hysteria alike

Etzioni carved out his public role as the field’s designated de-dramatizer. In years of op-eds — with titles like “AI Won’t Exterminate Us — It Will Empower Us” and “No, the Experts Don’t Think Superintelligent AI is a Threat to Humanity” — he argued that runaway-AI scenarios belong to science fiction, that surveys of actual researchers show little fear of imminent superintelligence, and that slowing American AI progress would be done “at our peril.” He draws the line at autonomous weapons and insists that “my AI did it” is never an excuse: humans keep responsibility for their tools.

His optimism is not complacency about every risk. Judging deepfakes a concrete threat to elections, he founded the nonprofit TrueMedia.org in 2024 to give newsrooms and fact-checkers free detection tools through the voting season. By 2026 he was still threading the same needle — telling GeekWire that AI agents are overhyped in the near term yet remain powerful “tools working on our behalf,” and that the boom is far from over.
