Pete Docter
Chief Creative Officer of Pixar
Pixar’s chief creative officer and director of Up, Inside Out, and Soul. He calls today’s generative AI “the least impressive blah average of things” — yet welcomes it to lift animation’s heavy burdens and even sees a possible “game changer,” so long as humans keep the performance and the authorship.
In his words
AI seems like it is the least impressive blah average of things.
I was wondering whether AI will continue to help us lift some of the heavy burdens that we have to carry as an animator and maybe put the focus more on the performance.
Biography
Pete Docter (born 1968) is an American animator and director, one of Pixar’s earliest employees and, since 2018, its chief creative officer. He directed Monsters, Inc., Up, Inside Out, and Soul — the latter three earning him three Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature — and has shaped the studio’s storytelling for three decades.
Unimpressed, but not dismissive
Appearing on Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast in 2025, Docter delivered one of the more quotable put-downs of generative AI, calling its output the “least impressive blah average of things” — a jab at models that, by construction, regress toward the mean of their training data. He acknowledged that everyone in animation is “troubled” by the technology, but said he does not believe it will erase humans from the filmmaking process.
In the same conversation, though, Docter sketched the pro case from the trenches: animation is full of heavy, repetitive labor, and he openly wondered whether AI could keep lifting those burdens so animators can focus on performance — the acting inside the animation. Earlier, in March 2025 remarks reported by Animation Magazine, he went further, suggesting AI could be a “game changer” in the hands of storytellers.
It is the posture of a craftsman who has lived through disruptive tooling before: Pixar itself was founded on the bet that computers — then accused of killing hand-drawn animation — would become instruments of artistry. Docter’s view of AI runs on the same logic: unimpressive as an artist, promising as an apprentice.
