Pink Floyd

Formed in London in 1965, Pink Floyd turned studio technology itself into an instrument — tape loops, synthesizers, quadraphonic sound — and sold over 250 million records doing it. A band that once built an album around a cash-register sample was never likely to sit out the AI era, and across 2023–24 its surviving members engaged with the technology rather than against it.

Remix machines and machine-made videos

In November 2023, Sony Music launched an official generative-AI project around “Metallic Spheres In Colour,” David Gilmour’s album with The Orb: fans visiting metallicspheres.io could prompt an AI to generate personalized remixes of the music and reimagined cover art from stems of Gilmour’s own guitar and vocals — one of the first AI remix platforms sanctioned by a major recording artist.

Months later, the band’s Dark Side of the Moon 50th-anniversary animation competition named Damián Gaume’s AI-assisted “Marble Mannequin” — built with locally trained Stable Diffusion models — a winner for “Any Colour You Like.” Fans and animators called the choice lazy and demanded the prize be rescinded; the band let the award stand.

Drummer Nick Mason went furthest in words: asked by the Sunday Mirror in July 2024 about AI-generated Pink Floyd, he called the prospect fascinating and joked that AI could engineer a reconciliation between Gilmour and the long-estranged Roger Waters, letting the band tour again “like ABBA” — a nod to the avatar shows championed by Björn Ulvaeus.
