From hydrogen bomb to rhino skin

Promoting Napoleon in late 2023, Scott gave Rolling Stone one of the era’s most-quoted AI warnings, calling the technology a “technical hydrogen bomb” and sketching a scenario where self-improving computers seize the world’s “electrical-monetary system.” He repeated the alarm elsewhere, telling interviewers that once an AI is smarter than you, “you’ll never know until the AI decides to do its own thing.”

Less than a year later he had changed his tune in practice. Describing the rhino-mounted gladiator fight in Gladiator II to Empire in August 2024, Scott explained that his team had a computer “read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino” to fabricate the creature’s skin for an eight-wheeled practical beast — and declared flatly that “computerization and AI, you have to embrace it.” Outlets from IndieWire to Fox News framed it as a full reversal.

Scott’s trajectory mirrors that of his fellow blockbuster technologist James Cameron: dire warnings about runaway AI paired with enthusiastic hands-on adoption of the tools. Scott has never disowned the safety worries — but on set, the man who invented cinema’s most famous killer android now treats AI as one more piece of kit.
