Robert Zemeckis

Robert Zemeckis (born 1951) directed Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump — which won him the Best Director Oscar — and has spent four decades pushing filmmaking technology past its limits, from blending animation with live action to pioneering (and evangelizing) performance-capture in The Polar Express and Beowulf.

Here, and the AI youth mirror

For Here (2024), an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s graphic novel that watches a single room across decades, Zemeckis needed Tom Hanks and Robin Wright to play their characters from young adulthood to old age. He partnered with AI studio Metaphysic, whose Metaphysic Live tool performed photorealistic, real-time generative de-aging on set — actors could glance at a “youth mirror” monitor and adjust their performances as their younger selves.

Announcing the partnership in early 2023, Zemeckis called Metaphysic “clearly the global leaders in feature-quality AI content” and framed the technology as the only way the film could exist at all. Hanks was rendered at five different ages, Wright at four, with human artists refining the neural network’s output.

Here divided critics and underperformed at the box office — some reviewers found the de-aging uncanny, and the film became a lightning rod in the wider argument about AI in Hollywood. But as with performance capture twenty years earlier, Zemeckis treated the rough first outing as tuition: he has consistently argued that story-serving technology eventually matures, and that someone has to go first.
