Ron Howard

Ron Howard (born 1954) grew up on American television — Opie on The Andy Griffith Show, Richie Cunningham on Happy Days — before becoming one of Hollywood’s most reliable directors: Splash, Apollo 13, and A Beautiful Mind, which won him the 2002 Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. With Brian Grazer he co-founded Imagine Entertainment, one of the industry’s most prolific production companies.

Signing the copyright line

In March 2025 Howard was among the first-listed signatories — alongside Guillermo del Toro, Cate Blanchett, and Paul McCartney — of the open letter from more than 400 entertainment figures to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The letter answered OpenAI and Google submissions seeking permission to train on copyrighted work without licenses, arguing the companies were “arguing for a special government exemption so they can freely exploit America’s creative and knowledge industries” and that access to America’s creative catalog “is not a matter of national security.”

Howard, though, is no AI opponent in the broader sense. In June 2026 he appeared at Runway’s AI Film Festival at Lincoln Center, calling the technology “very exciting” for helping storytellers get ideas out, predicting filmmakers “will want it,” and musing that Muppets creator Jim Henson — subject of his documentary Idea Man — would have embraced the tools. “I’m worried about it, on a professional level,” he conceded. “But again, our job is to experiment with it and learn from it and work with it.”
