Satya Nadella
CEO of Microsoft
Microsoft CEO who bet the company on AI — bankrolling OpenAI with over $13 billion and threading Copilot through every product. Frames AI as a “cognitive amplifier” in the tradition of computing as a bicycle for the mind.
In his words
Computing throughout its history has been about empowering people and organizations to achieve more, and AI must follow the same path.
We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs. sophistication and develop a new equilibrium in terms of our “theory of the mind” that accounts for humans being equipped with these new cognitive amplifier tools.
Biography
Satya Nadella (born 1967) has been CEO of Microsoft since 2014. Raised in Hyderabad, India, he joined Microsoft in 1992 and rose through its server and cloud divisions, building Azure into the company’s future. As CEO he revived a stagnating giant — embracing open source, buying GitHub and LinkedIn, and multiplying Microsoft’s value roughly tenfold into the world’s most valuable company club.
Betting the company on Copilot
Nadella made the defining corporate wager of the AI era: a partnership with OpenAI that grew from $1 billion in 2019 to over $13 billion, securing Microsoft early access to GPT-4 and the compute contract for the frontier. He shipped the result relentlessly — GitHub Copilot for programmers, then Copilot across Windows, Office, and Bing — declaring a new era of AI “copilots” for every profession. When OpenAI’s board fired Sam Altman in November 2023, Nadella’s intervention was pivotal in reversing it within days.
His framing has stayed consistently humanist and pragmatic. He resists AGI mysticism — he has said he does not find the term useful — and instead talks about “cognitive amplifiers,” agents serving as chiefs of staff, and the distinction that knowledge work may be automated while knowledge workers move up a level. In a January 2026 post on his personal blog he pushed back on the “AI slop” framing, and he has warned the industry that AI must show real economic value or lose its “social permission” to consume so much energy. Critics point to Copilot fatigue among users and the sheer market power of the OpenAI alliance; Nadella’s answer is that diffusion — millions of ordinary people achieving more — is the only scoreboard that matters.
