Thomas Dohmke

Thomas Dohmke is a German-American engineer who joined Microsoft when it acquired his startup HockeyApp, helped orchestrate Microsoft’s purchase of GitHub, and became GitHub’s CEO in November 2021. His defining project was GitHub Copilot — he took the AI pair-programmer from novelty to a product used across much of the industry, predicting as early as 2023 that it would eventually write 80 percent of code while insisting the developer “is not going to be replaced.”

Developers, reinvented

In August 2025 Dohmke published “Developers, Reinvented,” a blog post drawing on GitHub research into developers working AI-first. Its most-quoted line — “Either you have to embrace the AI, or you get out of your career” — came from one of the interviewed developers, but Dohmke made it the post’s thesis, arguing that engineers now “focus on the delegation and the verification of a task” rather than typing code themselves. Headlines rendered it as the GitHub CEO telling coders to embrace AI or quit.

Against the layoff narrative, Dohmke consistently argued AI grows the profession: the smartest companies, he said in 2025, will hire more developers, because “if you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x.” He left GitHub in August 2025, as the unit was folded deeper into Microsoft’s AI organization, to become a startup founder again.
