Biography
Tim Cook (born 1960 in Alabama) is the chief executive of Apple, the operations virtuoso who succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011 and turned Apple into the first multi-trillion-dollar company. For years he avoided the term “AI” in favor of “machine learning,” positioning Apple as the privacy-first counterpoint to data-hungry rivals.
Apple Intelligence and the late-but-deliberate bet
That caution ended in 2024. At Apple’s February shareholder meeting Cook promised the company would “break new ground” in generative AI that year, saying it would “unlock transformative opportunities” for users. At WWDC in June 2024 he unveiled Apple Intelligence — on-device and private-cloud generative features across iPhone, iPad, and Mac — alongside a headline partnership integrating Sam Altman’s ChatGPT into Siri. Cook has repeatedly described generative AI as a profound, once-in-a-generation technology that Apple must embed across its products.
Execution has been rockier than the rhetoric. The AI-powered Siri overhaul slipped repeatedly, drawing lawsuits over features advertised before they shipped and persistent criticism that Apple trails OpenAI, Google, and Meta in frontier AI. Cook’s answer has been characteristic: Apple, he argues, is rarely first but aims to be best, combining generative AI with privacy protections its competitors cannot match.
