The Grand Budapest Hotel director became generative AI’s favorite style to imitate when viral “Wes Anderson” trailers swept the internet in 2023 — and responded by simply declining to look, taking no side in the fight over the tools.

I choose not to really engage. I guess it’s because I don’t want to get distracted by that… Maybe you say, I’d really like to see it, and maybe you say, I don’t want to see a version of me, even if it’s good.
At some point, I’m sure I’ll go in there and see. But I’ve never seen a TikTok, for instance, of anything. I’m not going to start with me.
Biography
Wes Anderson (born 1969 in Houston) is among the most instantly recognizable stylists in cinema — the symmetrical framing, pastel palettes and deadpan ensembles of Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Grand Budapest Hotel (winner of four Oscars) and Asteroid City. In 2024 he won his first personal Academy Award, for the short The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
The internet’s favorite prompt
That signature look made him generative AI’s most-imitated director. In spring 2023, Curious Refuge’s AI-made mock trailer “The Galactic Menagerie” — Star Wars as directed by Wes Anderson — racked up hundreds of thousands of YouTube views and over a million on Twitter, followed by Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter variants and a TikTok wave of ordinary people “Wes Anderson-ifying” their lives. His aesthetic became a one-word prompt.
Asked about the trend while promoting Asteroid City in June 2023, Anderson told The Daily Beast he had been exposed to it only “verbally” and had watched none of it: he chooses not to engage, comparing it to being told a friend does a great impression of you and preferring not to see a version of himself, “even if it’s good.” He noted he has never watched a TikTok of anything, and was not going to start with himself.
Unlike many peers, Anderson has taken no position on the technology itself — no lawsuit, no open letter, no endorsement. While directors like Guillermo del Toro denounce AI and others experiment with it, the man whose style trained a thousand prompts has simply gone on making films by hand, indifferent to the imitations.
