Whitney Wolfe Herd (born 1989) co-founded Tinder, left after filing a sexual-harassment suit against the company in 2014, and founded Bumble that same year on a simple inversion: women make the first move. When Bumble went public in February 2021 she became, at 31, the youngest woman to take a U.S. company public and briefly the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire.

The AI dating concierge

At the Bloomberg Technology Summit in May 2024, Wolfe Herd sketched a future in which an AI concierge learns your insecurities, coaches your communication, and — “if you want to get really out there” — screens matches by dating other people’s concierges, scanning a whole city to surface the three people worth meeting. A clip of the remarks drew over 10 million views on X and widespread mockery, with critics comparing the idea to a Black Mirror episode.

She was undeterred. After stepping back as CEO in early 2024, she returned to the job in March 2025 with Bumble’s stock and user growth flagging, telling Fortune the company needed reinvention — with AI-driven matching and coaching central to the reboot. Her argument is that dating apps’ swipe-fatigue is exactly the drudgery AI should absorb, freeing humans for the actual connection.

Skeptics counter that outsourcing courtship to agents strikes at the point of dating itself, and that AI personas could deepen the loneliness the apps promise to cure. Wolfe Herd’s bet is that the technology can be shaped into “a smarter, safer matchmaker” — and Bumble’s recovery now partly rides on it.
