In his words

The tools are capable of speeding up the process of what’s in my head, getting it out. You’re able to move at light speed with your creativity.

Biography

Wyclef Jean (born 1969) rose to fame with the Fugees, whose 1996 album The Score remains one of hip-hop’s best-selling records, and went on to a prolific career as a solo artist and producer. Born in Haiti, he mounted a headline-grabbing 2010 run for the Haitian presidency before being ruled ineligible.

A collaborator on Google’s Music AI Sandbox

Wyclef was among the artists Google DeepMind enlisted to help develop and demonstrate its Music AI Sandbox, a suite of generative tools powered by the Lyria model. In the promotional material he compared the technology to his lifelong practice of “digging in the crates” for samples — except the crate was now bottomless.

So right now, we’re digging in the infinite crate. It’s endless.

His embrace of AI as a producer’s instrument puts him on the opposite side of the debate from the many musicians who have signed protest letters against generative training. For Wyclef, a career built on sampling and reinvention makes AI a natural next tool rather than a threat.
