Björk

Musician

Iceland’s avant-pop legend who handed four decades of choral archives to Microsoft’s AI for “Kórsafn” (2020), a generative installation that rescores itself with the sky — an “AI tango” she says she gladly accepted.

In her words

An architectural structure downtown manhattan offered me the hand in an AI tango and i accepted the call.

Biography

Björk (born Björk Guðmundsdóttir, 1965, in Reykjavík) went from fronting the Sugarcubes to a solo run — “Debut,” “Homogenic,” “Vespertine” — that made her the most consistently inventive figure in pop. Her career-long project is fusing nature with technology: 2011’s “Biophilia” was released as the first app album and later acquired by MoMA.

Kórsafn: a choir conducted by the sky

In January 2020 Björk unveiled “Kórsafn” (Icelandic for “choral archives”), a permanent generative sound installation in the lobby of Manhattan’s Sister City hotel, built with Microsoft’s AI. She opened four decades of her choral archive — including recordings of Iceland’s Hamrahlíð Choir — and let an AI system rearrange the fragments around live input from a rooftop camera: bird migrations, clouds, passing planes, barometric pressure, sunrises. The score plays around the clock and never repeats, with the model learning to recognize sky events more precisely as seasons pass.

Her archives, she said, “will float through the pinball of artificial intelligence by the grid of bird migrations, clouds, aeroplanes and that voluptuous thing called barometer!”

The collaboration extended a lineage of generative experiments — from Brian Eno’s ambient systems to Jean-Michel Jarre’s EōN app — but with Björk’s signature inversion: rather than the algorithm imitating her, she gave it her raw material and let the weather conduct. Critics found the result by turns sublime and unnerving; for Björk it was simply the newest instrument in a thirty-year duet between the organic and the synthetic.
