Biography
Ariana Grande (born 1993) is one of the defining pop vocalists of her generation — a four-octave range, multiple Grammy wins, and an Oscar-nominated turn as Glinda in Wicked. That instantly recognizable voice made her a favorite raw material for AI voice-cloning tools: covers putting “Ariana” on other artists’ songs rack up millions of plays across YouTube and TikTok, none of them sung by her.
“What are we doing?”
Grande addressed the clones directly in February 2024, on The Zach Sang Show ahead of her album Eternal Sunshine. Asked whether she had heard the viral AI covers of her voice, she didn’t hedge: “What are we doing? Why? I hate it. It’s terrifying.” When Sang floated the industry’s favorite defense — that AI vocal models could help songwriters pitch demos — she shut it down by repeating, “It’s terrifying.” In the same interview she tore into the “crooks” leaking her stolen studio demos to TikTok, part of the same loss of control over her own voice.
Grande has not joined lawsuits or signed the open letters that drew peers like Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj into organized campaigns; her opposition is personal and blunt rather than institutional. But as one of the most-cloned voices in music, her flat rejection of even the “useful demo tool” framing carries weight in the industry’s consent debate.
