In his words

I’m hoping that it’s going to be a tool that all of us can use to make ourselves better and make the world better.

I don’t have all doom and gloom. I don’t feel like, “Oh no, it’s going to be like Terminator where it comes and destroys all the human jobs.”

Biography

Jack Black (born 1969) is an actor and comedian — “School of Rock,” “Jumanji,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “A Minecraft Movie” — and half of the mock-metal duo Tenacious D. His public persona is manic and irreverent, which made his measured take on AI, offered just as Hollywood was fighting over the technology, stand out.

Not all doom and gloom

In a late-2023 interview conducted shortly after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, Black pushed back on the apocalyptic mood around AI. He said he did not see a “Terminator” future of destroyed jobs and instead hoped the technology would become a tool people could use to improve their lives, speculating it might even “cure cancer” or “perfect space travel.”

The optimism is notable because it came at the height of the industry’s AI anxiety, when many performers were focused on digital-replica protections. Black did not dismiss those concerns, but his instinct was toward possibility rather than fear.
