Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish (born 2001) became a global pop phenomenon as a teenager with 2019’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, sweeping the four main Grammy categories, and has since added two Oscars for “No Time to Die” and “What Was I Made For?” She is one of the most influential artists of her generation — which made her the natural marquee name for the music industry’s pushback against generative AI.

Headlining the ARA letter

In April 2024, Eilish was the headline signatory — alongside more than 200 artists including Nicki Minaj and Stevie Wonder — of the Artist Rights Alliance open letter calling on AI developers, tech companies, and music platforms “to cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” The letter charged that some of the biggest companies were using artists’ work without permission to train models, and declared: “This assault on human creativity must be stopped.” Notably, it conceded that AI “used responsibly” has “enormous potential to advance human creativity.”

Eilish has also lived the deepfake problem personally. In May 2025, when AI-generated images of her supposedly attending the Met Gala drew criticism of her “outfit,” she posted: “I wasn’t there! That’s AI. I had a show in Europe that night.”

Her stance has its wrinkles: in December 2025 she caught flak from fans for resharing AI-generated images depicting her as a man on her Instagram stories — a reminder that even the letter’s marquee signatory finds the technology hard to entirely resist.
