Stevie Wonder
Musician
The 25-time Grammy-winning Motown legend and lifelong technophile who welcomes AI that helps people — his rule is that it should “make life better for the living” — while vowing his own music will never be “programmed” and signing the Artist Rights Alliance letter against AI that steals artists’ voices.
In his words
I will not let my music be programmed. I’m not going to use it to do me and do the music I’ve done.
Let’s see how you make things better for people in their lives — not to emulate life but to make life better for the living.
Biography
Stevie Wonder (born Stevland Hardaway Morris, 1950) signed to Motown at 11 and went on to a run — Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life — that stands among the greatest in popular music, earning him 25 Grammys. Blind since infancy, he has also spent decades as a technophile, championing accessible technology and synthesizers long before AI.
Signing the letter, drawing his line
In April 2024, Wonder was one of the most storied names on the Artist Rights Alliance open letter — alongside Billie Eilish and fellow Motown great Smokey Robinson — calling on AI developers and platforms to stop using AI to “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists,” and warning against “the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses.”
He drew his personal line at CES in January 2026, where, while working on his first album in over two decades, he told Scientific American he would keep AI out of his own art: “I will not let my music be programmed. I’m not going to use it to do me and do the music I’ve done.” But his rule for the industry showed the pragmatism of a lifelong technology adopter: judge every tool by whether it serves people — “not to emulate life but to make life better for the living.”
Wonder’s stance thus splits cleanly: no AI counterfeits of human artistry, full support for AI that assists human life — a distinction with particular weight coming from an artist whose career was built on embracing new machines.
