Biography
Nicki Minaj (born Onika Tanya Maraj, 1982) is a Trinidadian-American rapper whose runs from Pink Friday (2010) to Pink Friday 2 (2023) made her the best-selling female rapper in history, with a fanbase — the Barbz — famous for its ferocity.
Signing against voice theft
Minaj joined the industry’s AI pushback on two fronts in 2024. In January and February she was among nearly 300 performers backing the bipartisan No AI FRAUD Act, appearing in a Human Artistry Campaign ad supporting the bill against nonconsensual AI voice clones and deepfakes. In April she was one of the marquee names — alongside Billie Eilish and Katy Perry — on the Artist Rights Alliance open letter demanding that AI developers and platforms “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”
Her relationship with the technology is more tangled than the signatures suggest. Futurism and others noted that Minaj has “leaned way into” AI herself: single artwork for her 2024 Megan Thee Stallion diss track and promo images for “Press Play” bore the garbled text and artifacts characteristic of AI generation, and she cheerfully embraced “Gag City,” the sprawling AI-generated pink metropolis her fans built to hype Pink Friday 2.
The through-line is self-interest rather than ideology: Minaj objects to AI that clones artists without consent, while treating generative imagery as fair game for her own promotion.
