Biography
Alexander Avila is a video essayist known for long-form, theory-dense YouTube essays on politics, technology and culture, drawing heavily on post-structuralist thinkers such as Derrida, Foucault and Butler.
“AI Wars”
His May 2025 essay “AI Wars: How Corporations Hijacked the Anti-AI Backlash” — more than three hours long — argues that generative AI does not “replace” artists but functions as one more tool inside an iterative creative process, the way digital audio workstations and non-linear editors did before it. He contends that much of the anti-AI movement has been co-opted by Big Media and copyright interests policing who is allowed to call themselves an artist.
The logic that says that speech is pure while writing is corrupt is the same logic that says that man is rational while woman is hysterical.
Avila is no techno-optimist: as a Marxist, he aims his sharpest fire at AI corporations and at capitalism, insisting the real fight is over control of the means of cultural production, not the tools themselves. That anti-corporate framing complicates any tidy label — but on the core question of whether generative AI belongs in creative work, he defends it, which places him closer to pro than to the artist-rights opposition he critiques.
