Anima Anandkumar

Caltech Professor, AI for Science

Caltech Bren Professor and former NVIDIA AI research director who led FourCastNet, the first fully AI-based weather model, and evangelizes neural operators as the engine of AI-accelerated science.

In her words

FourCastNet was the first fully AI-based weather model and was built using Neural Operators. It is tens of thousands of times faster than traditional weather models, while also being accurate.
AIhub, 2024
My goal is AI that deeply understands the physical world and is able to simulate and design without hallucinations. Language models are unable to do so since they have no physical grounding.

Biography

Anima Anandkumar is the Bren Professor of Computing at Caltech and one of the most prominent advocates of “AI for science.” Educated at IIT Madras and Cornell, she was a principal scientist at Amazon Web Services before serving as NVIDIA’s senior director of AI research, where she straddled frontier industry compute and academic science.

Forecasting the planet at machine speed

Her signature achievement is FourCastNet, developed with NVIDIA and Caltech collaborators in 2021–22: the first high-resolution, fully AI-based weather forecasting model. Built on the neural-operator framework her group pioneered — networks that learn continuous physical functions rather than pixel grids — it delivers a two-week forecast in under a minute on a gaming GPU. The same methods have been applied to nuclear-fusion plasma modeling, where she reports speedups of more than a million times over numerical simulation, and to designing better medical catheters.

Anandkumar frames physically grounded AI as the corrective to chatbot hype: models that simulate the real world can be checked against it. She has briefed the White House science council (PCAST) on AI-enabled science, spoke at TED in 2024, and in 2026 was appointed to the United Nations Scientific Advisory Board. She has also been a pointed critic of the field’s culture, publicly challenging harassment and naming conventions (she led the campaign to rename the NeurIPS conference).
