Biography
Beppe Grillo (born 1948) is one of Italy’s most famous comedians and satirists, who in 2009 co-founded the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) — for a time the largest party in the Italian parliament — before stepping back from its leadership.
AI is coming; share the spoils
On his long-running blog, Grillo treats mass automation and AI as inevitable and publishes a steady stream of pieces — many by guest contributors or translated from the foreign press — arguing that the answer is not to halt the machines but to redistribute what they produce. He has personally campaigned for a universal basic income since well before the chatbot era, and the blog has amplified proposals like Bernie Sanders’s sovereign AI wealth fund, which would hand the public an ownership stake in the AI giants.

Collaborare o Competere?” — is his clearest personal statement on the technology: he catalogues AI diagnosing skin cancer and Alzheimer’s, asks what becomes of translators and language teachers, and answers his own title by choosing collaboration. Paired with his insistence that a universal basic income is the only serious answer to the jobs automation removes, it places him among the optimists who accept the technology while fighting over who captures its gains.
