Craig Mazin

Craig Mazin (born 1971) spent years writing studio comedies (the Hangover sequels, Scary Movie films) before a stunning reinvention as the creator of HBO’s Chernobyl (2019), which swept the Emmys, and co-creator — with Neil Druckmann — of The Last of Us, one of the most-watched prestige dramas of the decade. The Craig bot argument

During the 2023 Writers Guild strike — the first labor action to put generative AI at the center of contract talks — Mazin made the case for AI guardrails on Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast, sparring with producer Jason Blum over whether the threat was real or overblown. His logic cut past the usual craft debate: “If AI can do the things that I do, they’re just gonna get rid of us.” And if a convincing “Craig bot” were possible within five years, he told the studios, the fight itself was moot — no writers, no guild, and no executives either, since everyone in the chain would be equally replaceable.

The WGA’s eventual contract won landmark protections — AI cannot write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated text cannot be treated as source material to undercut writer credit or pay. Mazin, who was aligned with the guild throughout, went back to making television that doubles as an argument for the human hand: painstaking, research-heavy drama about how institutions fail when nobody takes responsibility.
