Elizabeth Warren
U.S. Senator
Massachusetts senator and Wall Street scourge who has turned her oversight machinery on AI — demanding OpenAI rule out a taxpayer bailout and investigating AI czar David Sacks’ conflicts of interest.
In her words
We have seen this before: take on enough debt, make enough risky bets, and then demand a taxpayer bailout when those bets go south so the economy does not crash.
OpenAI appears to be privatizing profits while seeking ways to let the public defray the costs of any potential failures of its business strategy.
Biography
Elizabeth Warren (born 1949) is the senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts, a former Harvard law professor who built her career on the wreckage of the 2008 financial crisis. As ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, she has approached the AI boom the way she approached the banks: as a concentration of unaccountable financial power waiting to fail onto the public.
Oversight by letter
Warren has fired off a steady barrage of oversight letters on AI in banking, insurance, and hiring. When OpenAI’s CFO floated a federal “backstop” for the company’s trillion-dollar compute commitments, Warren wrote directly to Sam Altman demanding he specify the conditions under which OpenAI would seek a taxpayer rescue, and pressed the Trump administration to promise it would not prop up AI firms with public money. She has repeatedly invoked the specter of an AI bubble whose costs land on working families.
She has also led the congressional investigation into David Sacks, the White House AI and crypto czar, arguing that his retained investments and special-government-employee status create ethics conflicts — warning in 2025 that any effort to stay beyond his 130-day limit “would raise additional ethics concerns.” Earlier, she scrutinized OpenAI’s conversion from nonprofit governance and its safety-team departures.
Warren’s critics note she opposes almost every large tech consolidation, and that no AI bailout has actually been requested; her defenders reply that pre-positioning oversight before a crisis is precisely the lesson of 2008.
