Emil Eifrem

Emil Eifrem is a Swedish software engineer who co-created Neo4j, the database that popularised the graph model — storing data as nodes and relationships rather than rows and tables — and co-founded the company (originally Neo Technology) to commercialise it. He famously sketched the first graph model on an airplane napkin, and has spent two decades arguing that the connections between data are as important as the data itself.

The generative-AI wave turned Neo4j’s thesis into a selling point. Eifrem has leaned hard into “GraphRAG” — using knowledge graphs to ground large language models in structured, verifiable relationships and reduce hallucination — and positioned Neo4j as foundational infrastructure for the AI era. He describes the moment not as adding an AI feature to existing software but as a wholesale re-platforming, with graph-powered retrieval as the architecture shift happening beneath it. Neo4j has committed major investment to backing AI startups building on graphs.

Eifrem’s enthusiasm is, of course, self-interested — a replatforming that runs through graph databases is very good for the leading graph-database company. But his underlying argument, that trustworthy AI needs to be anchored in explicit, connected knowledge rather than statistical guesswork alone, echoes a broader industry turn toward retrieval and grounding.
