Eric Topol

Eric Topol (born 1954) is an American cardiologist, geneticist, and one of the ten most-cited researchers in medicine. He chaired cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic — where he helped raise the alarm that led to the withdrawal of Vioxx — before founding the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, where he serves as director and as executive vice president of Scripps Research.

Deep Medicine

Topol’s 2019 book “Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again” laid out the thesis that has anchored his advocacy since: by taking over pattern-recognition tasks like reading scans and drafting notes, AI can hand clinicians back the time that industrialized medicine stripped away. He led the UK’s independent “Topol Review” of how the NHS workforce should prepare for AI and digital medicine, published the same year.

He has kept up the case at a remarkable clip — in journal articles, a widely read Substack newsletter called Ground Truths, and lectures like his September 2024 NIH Grand Rounds, where he argued that machine eyes will catch what human eyes cannot and that multimodal AI can forecast disease early enough to prevent it. AI, he says, offers doctors “the gift of time” — the chance to restore the trust and empathy of the doctor–patient relationship.

Topol is no naif about the technology’s failure modes: he has long criticized premature claims, biased datasets, and the gap between retrospective studies and validated clinical benefit. His optimism is conditional — AI will transform medicine, he argues, only if it is held to medical-grade evidence.
