Hannah Fry

Mathematician & Broadcaster

Cambridge professor of the public understanding of mathematics, author of “Hello World,” and host of Google DeepMind’s podcast — Britain’s foremost explainer of algorithms, clear-eyed about their flaws and “really optimistic” about AI.

In her words

But I’m really optimistic. I feel really optimistic about it.
Possible podcast, 2025
What I do now all the time when I chat to an AI is I write in: “You need to tell me when I’m wrong.”
BBC Science Focus, 2026

Biography

Hannah Fry (born 1984) is a mathematician who became Britain’s most trusted voice on algorithms — first at UCL, and since 2024 as Cambridge’s professor of the public understanding of mathematics. Her book “Hello World: How to Be Human in the Age of the Machine” (2018) set the template for her career: rigorous about what algorithms get wrong, and fascinated by what they make possible.

The explainer in the machine

Since 2019 she has hosted “Google DeepMind: The Podcast,” interviewing researchers including Demis Hassabis about frontier AI, and her BBC documentaries — most recently “AI Confidential” in early 2026 — bring the technology’s trade-offs to mainstream audiences. Her brand is balance rather than boosterism: she insists AI systems “will always fall short of perfection,” that bias must be continually hunted and repaired, and that the machine should “fill in the gaps” around human strengths rather than replace them.

It has the potential to accelerate us away from what it is to be human and away from human connection.
BBC Science Focus, 2026

Yet her engagement lands squarely on the pro side: she uses AI chatbots daily (with a standing instruction to challenge her), warns about companion-bot “self-radicalising” while dismissing panic about human-AI relationships, and told Reid Hoffman’s Possible podcast in 2025 that she feels “really optimistic” about AI’s disruption of education. She has spoken of AI’s promise for genuinely transformational applications, from public services to science.
