Biography
Malcolm Gladwell (born 1963) turned social-science storytelling into a publishing genre: The Tipping Point (2000), Blink, Outliers, and 2024’s Revenge of the Tipping Point, alongside two decades at The New Yorker. He co-founded Pushkin Industries, whose Revisionist History podcast made him as influential in audio as in print.
The anti-alarmist
Gladwell staked out his AI position before ChatGPT made it fashionable. At Citrix Synergy in 2017 he argued automation clarifies rather than eliminates the human role, with experts needed at the critical points in decision-making chains “that a machine could never touch.” On Adam Grant’s WorkLife podcast the next year he dismissed alarmism outright, pointing to the surplus of undone human work.
He then put that optimism to commercial use, hosting Smart Talks with IBM — a Pushkin-produced podcast series running from 2021 through 2024 in which Gladwell and IBM executives like research chief Darío Gil walked business audiences through generative AI, trustworthy AI, and the productivity paradox. It is sponsored content, and transparently so: the skeptic’s knock on Gladwell’s AI cheer is that some of it is literally an advertisement.
Still, his framing has been consistent across paid and unpaid venues for nearly a decade: AI as an amplifier that raises the value of judgment, empathy, and the questions only humans think to ask — a gentler cousin of the augmentation case made by technologists like Kevin Kelly.
