How the formula works →- +3.2anti2 anti-AI statements (measured)
Weights, statement counts, the ×1.25 multiplier for having a stake in an AI-impacted field, and the formula’s smoothing are already baked in — the points add up to the score: Leaning Anti-AI · 3.2/10
In her words
A machine can produce an image or imitate a style, but it cannot experience heartbreak, longing, awe, grief, desire, memory, contradiction or love.
AI can generate astonishing things very quickly, but speed is not the same as meaning.
Biography
Debbie Millman (born 1961) is an American designer, author, and educator, best known as host of Design Matters — one of the longest-running design podcasts — and as chair of the Masters in Branding program she co-founded at the School of Visual Arts.
Speed versus meaning
Millman has become a prominent voice for human authorship in the AI era. In a 2026 interview she granted that generative tools can “generate astonishing things very quickly,” but drew a hard line between output and art: “speed is not the same as meaning.” A machine, she argued, “can produce an image or imitate a style, but it cannot experience heartbreak, longing, awe, grief, desire, memory, contradiction or love.”
Her Design Matters platform has hosted extended conversations on copyright, artist protections, and the ethics of training data, and she has repeatedly framed the worth of creative work as residing in lived human experience rather than in the finished artifact alone.
