Evan You

Evan You built two of the most-used tools in web development as an independent open-source developer. Vue.js, the framework he released in 2014 after leaving Google Creative Lab, became one of the world’s most popular ways to build user interfaces; Vite, his 2020 build tool, went further still, becoming the default development server for nearly every major JavaScript framework. In October 2024 he founded VoidZero to unify the fragmented JavaScript toolchain — Vite, the Vitest test runner, the Rolldown bundler, and the Oxc toolchain.

Tooling for the agent era

By 2026, You had noticed his tools’ newest power users were not human. In the June 4, 2026 post announcing VoidZero’s acquisition by Cloudflare, he wrote that AI agents were increasingly the ones scaffolding projects, running dev servers, reading errors, and iterating with Vite — and declared that VoidZero’s mission “now includes building better tooling for agents.” Cloudflare’s press release pitched the deal as building “the future of the AI-native web,” with a native “vite deploy” path meant to take developers and autonomous agents alike from idea to global production instantly.

The acquisition — coverage framed it around accelerating AI-coded app development — came with guardrails prized by the community: Vite and its siblings stay MIT-licensed and vendor-neutral, and Cloudflare committed $1 million to an independent ecosystem fund. You framed the move as gaining “the resources and global infrastructure to supercharge the developer experience for millions of engineers worldwide.”

Among framework authors, You’s posture is quietly practical rather than evangelical: no grand claims about the end of programming, just an infrastructure builder repositioning the web’s tooling layer for a world where agents write and deploy a growing share of its code.
