Eric Barone (born 1987), known online as ConcernedApe, spent four and a half years alone in a Seattle apartment writing every line of code, drawing every sprite, and composing every song of Stardew Valley (2016). The farming sim went on to sell over 40 million copies and became the gold standard for what a single human creator can accomplish — which gives his rejection of generative AI unusual moral weight.

“Why would I let an AI do that for me?”

In a May 2026 Game Informer interview, Barone confirmed that neither Stardew Valley nor his long-awaited follow-up Haunted Chocolatier will ever use generative AI. “My goal is to express myself in a creative way. Why would I let an AI do that for me?” he said, arguing that something is lost whenever AI touches creative work because creativity itself gets offloaded to an algorithm. If he ever needs help, he added, he would rather give another human being the chance to express themselves — a person “should take priority over a soulless machine.”

Barone allowed that AI might make sense in “very specific zoomed-in cases, maybe,” but his practice matches his principles: he still personally updates Stardew Valley a decade after release, hand-crafting new content for a game whose fanbase prizes exactly that human fingerprint. His stance echoes fellow indie perfectionist Jonathan Blow on the code side, though Barone’s objection is artistic rather than technical.
