Jason “Thor” Hall spent years at Blizzard Entertainment in QA and security before going indie to build the pixel-art RPG Heartbound under his one-man studio, Pirate Software. His bite-sized game-development commentary exploded across TikTok and YouTube Shorts in 2023–24, making him one of Twitch’s most-followed streamers — before a bruising 2025 (including his opposition to the Stop Killing Games initiative) cost him much of that audience.

The “Cat in the Chat” fight

In December 2024, when Twitch shipped a global holiday emote called “Cat in the Chat,” Hall dissected it frame by frame on stream — “the tongue melts into the teeth, this is not a structure that’s on an actual cat” — and concluded it was AI-generated, hands down. He said he was deeply disappointed in Twitch, and went beyond words: he configured Nightbot to automatically time out anyone who used the emote in his chat.

A line between consent and slop

Hall’s opposition is targeted rather than total. In November 2025 he defended Arc Raiders’ AI text-to-speech callout voices — built from audio that actors licensed for a fee — writing that they are “the same technology as live stream TTS” and that the backlash had reached “an absurd fever pitch that doesn’t make any sense to me.” He has also warned about AI’s darker uses, tweeting in 2024 that he fears “a future in which millions of AI instances catfish people for their money in an endless loop.” The through-line: paid, consented voice licensing is fine; unconsented generative output replacing artists is not.
