George Hotz

George Hotz (born 1989), known online as geohot, became famous at 17 as the first person to carrier-unlock the original iPhone, then jailbroke the PlayStation 3 — earning a lawsuit from Sony that made him a folk hero of the hacker world. In 2015 he founded comma.ai, whose open-source openpilot software retrofits ordinary cars with driver-assistance comparable to Tesla Autopilot; he remained involved until stepping away in 2025.

Commoditizing the petaflop

Hotz’s AI advocacy runs through hardware and openness rather than model hype. In 2022 he started tinygrad, a radically minimal deep-learning framework, and spun up the tiny corp around it — announcing in May 2023 that it had raised $5.1 million to break Nvidia’s software lock on AI compute and sell the tinybox, a consumer-grade AI supercomputer. The pitch was explicitly ideological: AI you own, running on hardware in your house, instead of closed models in someone else’s cloud.

He has carried that argument everywhere from Lex Fridman’s podcast to a brief, chaotic 2022 internship at Elon Musk’s Twitter. He dismisses doomer calls to centralize and regulate AI, arguing the real danger is concentration of capability in a few corporations and governments — the same gatekeeping instinct he has spent his whole career jailbreaking.

Critics note the gap between Hotz’s swagger and shipped results — comma never reached full self-driving, and tinygrad remains a challenger framework. But as an engineer-provocateur pushing compute into individual hands, he occupies a corner of the pro-AI camp nobody else fills, closer in spirit to Pieter Levels than to any lab CEO.
